Puritanism: The gift that keeps on giving
Mr. Slattern snapped this photo of a bumper sticker during a recent trip to Maine. I thought I’d share it with you just in case you were wondering why I drink…

A professor once told me that Californians speak to each other via bumper stickers, so being a Cali guy I find this hilarious!
If you were a Maine guy, you’d be crying in your beer.
I refuse to make a comment longer than the bumperstic…

‘Tis the season for religious reflection– if you read my post about vacation bible school, I would love to hear the down east side of this educational institution. . .
You know, I went to a Baptist vacation bible school just once with a friend, and I had exactly the same vacation bible school experience of being invited to come forward and accept Jesus Christ as my personal lord and savior! Coming as I did from long line of indifferent Congregationalists, the prospect of walking to the front of the church with a hundred pairs of zealous eyes boring into my soul only to be dunked under the water in a kiddie wading pool didn’t appeal. In our church there was no eye contact, let alone mid-sermon swimming. I’ll admit the Baptist minister’s threat of spending eternity in the lake of fire was persuasive, if not downright coercive, which I suspect was the point. But I hung tough and stayed put in my chair. I have never regretted it.
I have often heard the quote, “The definition of a Methodists is one who stays up all night and wonders if the Baptists are having a good time.”
Very funny. Here’s an old chestnut about the Baptists:
Q: Why don’t Baptists have sex standing up?
A: Because God might think they were dancing.
Ahhhh, that’s a famous H.L. Menken quote! And as born and bred New Englanders, we know that it’s true!
Once again, my tragic semi-literacy is exposed. Had no idea what the source was. Thanks for the attribution, Frankie! 😉
